The best method is through email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

How can artist increase their chances of getting booked? Be sure to send Sanctuary MV all the pertinent information. One of the big things is fan base; how big of a turn-out can they bring.

How far in advanced do you book shows? Normally we would be booking a few months out.

Is there a different procedure for weekends than weekdays for booking? No, we plan on doing things similar.

Will there be a contract? With national/regional touring bands yes, but with locals it will be confirmation.

Are there any artist/promoter compensation? It depends on type of show. We are looking into 30% of what the door brings in to split between bands.

Is there any deposits or security fees? With the type of venue we are; we don’t see the necessity, but will have our own security/keepers of the peace.

Are promoters/artist given a bar tab? We will not be offering a tab, but the artists will be given waters.

Are promoters/artist given the door or a percentage of the bar? The juice/coffee/pop bar is strictly going towards Sanctuary Church. Again, we are looking into 30% of what the door brings in to split between bands.

Function/Performance:

Function:

Load in time: Will be stated to the bands before the show – normally a few hours before the show.
Parking: Plenty of parking in Sanctuary MV’s lot.

PA setup, are artist/promoters expected to do this or will your staff handle this?
We will have our own staff, but the artists are in charge of their equipment; setting up and taking down.

Door person/Cashier - Is this provided by the venue's staff?
We will have our own Door/Cashier.

Performance:

Are there any restrictions on the type of music that can be performed?
This is an all-ages venue and Sanctuary MV will have their restrictions to what is brought in and what is not. ie – clean lyrics, on/off stage presentation, language, etc. We are looking to keep Sanctuary MV to where it has a draw from all genres from Folk to Heavy Metal.
Are there any concerns about noise levels, noise ordinances etc?
Not any concerns.
What are your show times, start of the show and end of the show?
Start of a show would range – wkd (7-8pm) to (11pm-12am).

History:

When was this venue established?
The bldg. has been there for some time. Sanctuary MV’s takeover was in Oct.2010 – first show will be held Feb.12th.
What was this venue previously?
Jillian’s Nite Club
How long has the venue been under it's current management?
Since Oct 2010
What artists have performed at this venue?
None so far our first show – Feb.12th.
Why was this venue created?
It was created to bring a different aspect to the Louisville community. The kids/teens/young adults are our next generation and we want to give them something in their community to call their own. To be able to express themselves through music, to provide a safe spot and enjoy being young. To also give a parent a relief in knowing that their kids are being part of something positive.

What makes this venue special?
The atmosphere, Sanctuary MV’s people, the bands we bring in and our customers.

What can an artist/promoter expect when booking at this venue?
They can expect to be accommodated appropriately and as an outlet for their fans to listen to their music and expand their base.

Louisville Music Booking at the Sanctuary

Present/Future Goals:

Future Events:
With our staff having numerous years in the music industry – through Sanctuary MV this will be the route through for many artists. We will be hosting Battles for national music festivals. We want to be able to host benefits for awesome causes, etc.

Expansion Plans:
Sanctuary Music Venue has plenty of space to hold some major shows. Our expansion plans are somewhat different. We want to expand into the community and let everyone know we’re here and we’re bringing top quality music. And expanding the music scene in Louisville w/local artists.

Goals for venue:
We look to be one of the premiere venues in the area where bands want to come and play and customers know they when they step foot into Sanctuary MV that they are going to have an awesome experience!

I was at the first show on the 12th.
The 'Bar' they have was serving only coffee and water. From my understanding, the bands got none of the door and at the beginning of the night, they were going to charge the bands for water. I could be wrong, but this is just what I heard.
From this article, they make it sound like it is a strictly music venue run by a church, but when I was there they kept bringing up religion. I can understand promoting the venue for the next service and trying to get people to go to church but don't lead me to believe this is strictly a music venue online, then when I get there shove your religion at me. To me, it was almost enough that if I wasn't there to support my friends in the local bands, I probably would have left.
I can see this place having a lot of potential, as a venue. But, I think that the fact that it is a church will turn some away because they don't want religion shoved at them when they just want to hear music.

* Venue provided PA
* 1275 person capacity

Those are not really tech specs. That does nothing for me if I were to send my rider for club tours that states "A professional fully working 3 or 4 way sound system free of buzzes, hums, snaps, crackles, and pops capable of 120DB (C weighted) at the mix position."

This gets even more important when you say 1200 cap room. For a quick example Headliners' PA wouldn't do a 1200 seat room under rock/metal show conditions, bluegrass maybe.

Is it an EAW KF740 line array? A JBL SRX rig? A pair of SP2s with blown horns? I'm sure you can see the confusion one would have booking there. Then again if they are just gonna cater to locals then tour riders would be no issue anyway. Kind of makes ZERO sense to have a room that big and expect local bands to pack it though.

* All Ages / No Liquor licence

All ages is cool, but no liquor may turn away some people, I would hope the place at least has beer.

30% of the door goes to the bands? Fuck that. Seems just like someone just looking to rip off and exploit young kids that don't know any better. It's not about the money, but there is a point where bands are taken advantage of.

Exactly, and if it is only beer, it would be cool to have a huge selection to choose from. Imports, and all kinds of shit. Create something really cool about your venue that has nothing to do with the bands, this would really help a venue in my opinion. This way the venue will have a better chance of depending on the bar for their financial needs............which would enable the bands to take all of the door.

Just my thoughts

Most places are negotiable on their booking fees. Plus he says "We are looking into 30% of what the door brings in to split between bands." which says to me that the actual split is still undetermined. But seeing how they are obviously going to have problems convincing bands to come out and fill up 1000+ person venue for only 30% I think they would have to be open to negotiating that part.

Are there giant support beams right in front of the stage? Or am I interpreting those pictures wrong?

Also, who performs in a mall? Seriously?

I can understand the desire to have a family friendly place, but let's face it - I think that the discretion on the part of the promoter would come across as less heavy handed than the censorship or blackballing of bands based on their message or lyrics. Also, Skull Alley, which was right down the street, never had any policy like this, and never ever had any problems with families who wanted to bring their children in tow. I could be interpreting the rule the wrong way, but when you combine that policy with the impression that this is a venue run by a church group, it comes across as a situation where the values of the people running it are more important than the message of an artist performing. It comes across as exclusionary to somebody whose songs aren't either Jesus-centric, or just lame radio rock.

I'm all for all ages venues. I just don't want one where art takes a back seat to morality for the sake of imaginary children in the audience.

Quoting Adam Rains:
I don't want to support this place. Expecting 70% of the door to go to the venue is borderline exploitation of any bands looking to play here, and completely screws smaller touring bands who might consider playing here otherwise. I could overlook the religious aspect, if it wasn't being waved in my face, but that, combined with the terrible door situation, and the censorship of bands who have "offensive" lyrics is offensive to me. I think I speak for Louisville's DIY punk and hardcore community when I say that I don't want anything to do with this place, and I would rather shell money out of my pocket to put on shows for bands anywhere else.

I agree on the door situation, to some degree. But you gotta think that place is huge and they don't serve liquor. However I think that in time they may become more flexible with the door split.

As far as the censorship goes, I don't think its that big of a deal because it's supposed to be a family friendly place, you'd have to deal with the same sort of thing if you were preforming at a mall. Maybe I can get Luke to be more specific on the limitations of "on/off stage presentation, language, etc"
