Solid Support

Murk-A-Troid has dropped their new album "Heavens To" in my hand for a fresh review. With several guest performers on the album and strong support from the scene, I knew this album would be worth the listen and I was not wrong.

Lyricaly Speaking

There is a certain allure to the lyricism of Murk-A-Troid's Crash. With a consistent style and delivery similar to a spoken word poet, Crash disregards the ebb and flow of the melodies and the bump of the beat. It's as if the focus is on the delivery of the lyric through slow beats, both fast and smooth. Content wise, Murk offers some clever rhymes. However, they rarely hold to any specific theme or concept on most of their songs. Despite this, it's not hard to get lost in Murk-A-Troid's lyricism, trying to figure out where this MC's mind is going. Crash will follow a tangent on the theme of the song with out so much as a rest. Crash's almost mechanical production of lyrics can leave you in a bit of a daze; it sort of drags you into it.

Sound sounds

"Heavens To" is surprisingly musical. The beats are layered with guitar riffs and rolling melodies that aren't too common in hip hop. This IMO makes the album. While the music gives the album a darker overtone, it manages to complement Crash's mechanical style very well. Adding to that daze I was talking about earlier; the music is dark and reflective, more so than the lyricism. This leaves me looking for deeper content that's more focused on a theme.

Rap's Up

Murk-A-Troid's music is not pop. If that's what you are looking for, you will not find it here. The song ''Just Be Careful'' was one of the most honest tracks on the album. It gives a very clear look into who Crash is what he's thinking about. ''Focused on Paper Work'' is another one of my favorites on the album. With contributions from Goodbar and Legacci, this is another track that you should listen to. But perhaps my favorite song is ''Ghostwriter''. Guest staring Sultra Devine, I got drawn into the hook. There is just something so smooth about this track. If you don't hear any other track, you must hear this one.
